W. J. Baverstock was a photographer established in Marlborough by about 1860. His studio was at St Peter’s, Marlborough, and a surviving carte-de-visite back bears the Royal Arms and states that the business was “Established 1860”. He was also engaged in portrait photography, and a portrait by Baverstock dated 1868 is preserved in the State Library of South Australia.
Baverstock produced a substantial series of topographical views of Marlborough and its surroundings. Six known carte-de-visite views comprise three of Marlborough and three of nearby Savernake Forest. Four different backs advertise “Sixpenny Card Views of Marlborough and its Environs”, showing that these photographs were produced as a deliberate commercial series of local views rather than as occasional additions to his portrait work.
The Savernake Forest photographs demonstrate the geographical range of his activities beyond the town itself, while his Marlborough views provide a record of the town during the 1860s and 1870s. Baverstock also undertook outdoor group photography, including a photograph of the Marlborough College football team in 1873.
His work illustrates the varied activities of the provincial photographer, combining a conventional portrait studio with the production of inexpensive photographic views for visitors and local residents. |
